The October issue of Velo magazine looks ahead to the cyclocross season.

Cyclocross season is here, and to get you geared up for all the exciting, muddy autumn action, we’ve dedicated most of Velo’s October issue to ‘cross racing.

Not so familiar with all the different “van” and “van der” names you see once the racing leaves the pavement? Not to worry. Dan Seaton offers a comprehensive overview of the top European riders to watch on the World Cup, Superprestige, and Bpost Bank Trofee series. Many of these riders are talented young additions to the circuit — a new wave of topsporters. Seaton also provides a guide to five must-watch European cyclocross courses — Zonhoven, Koksijde, Overijse, Oudenaarde, and Diegem.

As for the stateside stars, Chris Case assesses 14 riders to watch in the U.S. pro ‘cross ranks — seven women and seven men. While the contingent of American racers has never been stronger, the domestic race scene is a discombobulated mix of races in USA Cycling’s sprawling Pro CX calendar. Spencer Powlison considers what should be done to improve the circuit for fans and racers alike.

If all this ‘cross talk has you inspired to start racing, our tech team, led by Dan Cavallari has an in-depth Velolab test of four cyclocross bikes for your fall campaigns.

Alternately, if you’d rather stick to the asphalt, the October issue has a host of stories from the road. Ryan Newill writes about six lesser-known Italian one-day races that will offer exciting action to close out the 2015 season. Case sits down with Fabian Cancellara, who’s hoping to bounce back after a miserable 2015 season, and on the other side of the peloton’s age spectrum, Caley Fretz writes about Axel Merckx’s Axeon Cycling development team, which has sent an impressive one-third of all its riders on to the WorldTour since its inception.
